Countries of the Greater Mekong zero in on falciparum malaria

18 December 2019 – The 6 countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion continue to make significant gains in their battle to eliminate malaria by 2030. According to the latest bulletin from the WHO Mekong Malaria Elimination programme, the reported number of P. falciparum cases dropped by 65% in the first half of 2019 compared to the same period last year. This accelerated decrease is especially critical in view of the ongoing threat posed by drug resistance.

Malaria eradication

Targeting a malaria-free world

After a 3-year study of trends and future projections, WHO’s Strategic advisory group on malaria eradication has published a set of key findings and recommendations from their work. A detailed report is expected early next year.

Key initiatives

High burden to high impact

Cover of the publication

Approximately 70% of the world’s malaria cases are concentrated in just 11 countries. This new approach aims to accelerate progress in countries with a high burden of malaria.

E-2020 initiative

In 2016, WHO identified 21 countries, spanning 5 regions, that could defeat malaria by 2020. A new report charts their progress.

Vaccine pilot programme

In 2019, Ghana, Malawi and Kenya have rolled out the world’s first malaria vaccine in selected areas through a WHO-coordinated pilot programme.

More on malaria

Malaria is caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. P. falciparum is the most prevalent malaria parasite in Africa and responsible for most malaria deaths globally. P. vivax is the dominant parasite outside of sub-Saharan Africa.
